To colour or not to colour?

Fellas – To colour or not to colour, that is the question?

I walked into a Men’s shoe store the other day and glanced at their collection of numerous black and brown and black and brown and black and brown and black and …zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

I thought to myself “is that it?! How Depressing!!!”

Is it any wonder then that most men tend to own only two pairs of shoes, one black and one …I’ll let you guess the other one.

I haven’t got anything against black or brown but come on, aren’t you bored to tears of it by now?!
If you are, then listen up Fellas: there is a world of other gorgeous colours out there for you to choose from. It all depends on how daring you are!

If you’re the more risk averse type, how about starting off with something understated like a nice pair of navy blues or even something like this purple pointy shoes from Topman?

topman_purple_pointies

Or if you’re feeling rather brave, how about these hot pink from Office, the orange loafers from Kurt Geiger or the orange brogues from Paul Smith . Having said that, it takes a certain kind of ‘Je ne sais quoi’ to pull these off! Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained! So live a little and start exploring what works best for you.

Still not convinced about adding a bit colour to your shoe collection? Well, here’s a scientific fact for you: Wearing colour releases some kind of chemical in your brain that makes you stay happy all day long. (… hmm, actually I think I might have made that one up!)

On a more serious note, Men’s fashion, along with every thing else in this fast paced world we live in, is evolving and trends that would have been unheard of a few years ago are slowly making their way into the shops and into men’s wardrobes … the summer scarves, Man bags etc.

So isn’t it time you embraced a bit of colour? After all, you wouldn’t want to get left behind now, would you?

Diamonds are a …

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Diamond Shoes are a girl’s ‘bestest’ friend!

I found myself thinking about fairytales the other day (what’s a girl to do on a rainy lazy Sunday afternoon?) Anyway, you know the classics – Snow White, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, the Little Mermaid, Sleeping beauty…
And I started wondering which of those fairytales I could effortlessly fit into and which gorgeous princess I could impersonate:

Beauty/Belle? – Hmm, not bad except I don’t really fancy the whole “beast” thing!!

Sleeping beauty? – I do love my sleep but not that much!!

Little Mermaid – Half human, half fish?! …need I say more?!

Cinderella on the other hand… Oh Cinderella, I could definitely be!!

“But she had a sad life with the constant housework and ugly sisters” I hear you say.

That’s fine by me. I can handle all that.

What’s a bit of housework and mean ugly sisters. (Cleanliness is next to Godliness, after all, lol! And Helloooo, have you met my boss?! I’m telling you she could give those two sisters a run for their money!)

Yep, I think I could put up with all that for a chance to not just wear but own a pair of Glass slippers…

Or in my modern day version of the Cinderella story – DIAMOND SHOES (glass is soo 17th century, hehe!)

Think about it, how fabulous would those be!!

Anyway, in my quest for a pair of shoes made entirely of diamonds, I came across this beauty made by shoe designer Stuart Weitzman.

stuart_weitzman_diamond_shoes

Contemplating buying this? Well, these 3 inches of gorgeousness will set you back a cool $2 million (…recession? What recession?!)

Seeing as I’m not made of money (well not yet anyway! Hehe!) My search continues for a more affordable pair.

Wish me luck!! (Yeah, good luck with that, Sandra!)

…Seriously, What was Cinderella thinking leaving those behind?!…silly girl, lol!

The Man and his shoes

Not sure about you, but for some reason one of the first things I tend to notice about a man is what sort of shoes he is wearing *wink*, I know …I know…it might sound a bit shallow but hey before you crucify me check out how long it takes you to notice someone’s shoes next time you meet them.
General perception is that men aren’t as crazy about shoes as women but I have a male friend, a few actually, who are so in love with shoes. I can’t figure out who is worse – them or their fiancées. I know they might sound a bit extreme, so how about the guys who are not crazy about shoes or actually don’t know what’s out there for them. Here is some help for the brothers – so, what types of shoes are out there for you?
Alright, I know chances are you cannot own yellow pairs of shoes or pink or blue or all those crazy shoe colours women can have…but hey lets talk style! All your shoes don’t have to be black and they don’t all have to be pointes either! Let’s talk variety and let’s look at what else you can have.
I tell you something actually; I was absolutely shocked to find out how many different types of men’s shoes there are. I had to admit there was no way I could fit it all into one blog.
So let’s talk about laced-up shoes this time round – both formal and casual shoes:
Oxfords – An Oxford shoe is a laced-up shoe that doesn’t come above the ankle. They come in different styles-
Brogue – the term brogue is used to describe shoes with tiny holes which are punched on them to make patterns. This can cover the whole shoe- heavy brogue, or can simply be half of the shoes- half brogue.
Plain-toe: As the name suggests, these shoes are plain toed. Very simple but can be elegant with its clean cut. Not a lot of drama about them- at best they could have a few patterns on them. They come in different styles; round, pointed or square shaped.
Cap-toe: These shoes have a separate piece of leather in front of them and can either be plain or patterned.
Wing tips: These have wing like patterns.
Casual shoes: Everyday shoes you can wear with most things including jeans and chinos.
Boat shoes or Moccasins: Everyday casual shoes- can be worn with pretty much anything- jeans, chinos and khakis.
Sneakers: yet another everyday casual shoe. You can get really adventurous with sneakers. Great way to bring colour into your wardrobe…..
So now that you know you can have more than 4 pairs of black shoes with very similar styles…lol….it might be time to update your shoe collection…
I might as well add that the summer sales are still here, so get shopping!

Ok, maybe that sounds a bit extreme,  and the guys like that are rare. Many guys are not crazy about shoes- unlike us-, and most guys do not actually know what’s out there for them.  So, I decided to lend a helping hand. So what if you have big calves and thick ankles????

It is only fair to say that women love shoes a great deal- at least most of my male friends tell me this as they have to fight for space in the room ‘cos their spouse has her shoes everywhere! Well maybe some are not as bad as others. Some women love their shoes a little, some love them a lot and some are completely addicted….Shoeaholics I call them!

thick_legs

Well, what is important to note though is not all shoes suit all body types. I had noticed a beautiful young lady a few weeks ago who had fairly big legs or I should say calves for her size 10/12 body frame. And so I thought to myself- what shoes should a woman with thick calves and ankles wear or not wear?

Well, let’s talk about what shoe(s) not to wear if you have got big ankles & calves- Ankles straps are a big no no as they make your already big ankles look fatter.

Karen_millen_pink_studed_peep_toe_plat

I know that ballet pumps are the most comfortable, versatile shoes but sometimes the delicacy of these shoes can make the legs appear larger.

One other thing to avoid will be mules- this is because the enclosed front of the shoe reduces the length of your foot thus making it appear a lot chunkier and shorter.

kurt-geiger-dollymixture-green-courts-fashion

With such a list of shoes to avoid, I am sure you are wondering- Ha, what am I going to wear then?? Well, here is a few that I hope will put a smile on your face.

Platform shoes are perfect for you. They simply help balance your ankles and legs, and if they are open-toed- perfect! This will give an appearance of length. And oh- make sure your toes are well-manicured if you decide to go for the peep-toed option? ha ha ha

platform_bluelouboutin_peeptoe_plat_blackpiptoe_plat_red
Although they can sometimes be difficult to walk in if they are too long, pointed-toed shoes because they make the foot look longer and slender, are a nice way to balance out the thickness of your calves.

Aldo_black_courtkurt-geiger-bubblegum-yellow-courts-classic

If stiletto heels are not your thing and you do love your comfort, then wedge heel shoes can also be a good one as long as the toes are not enclosed and they don’t have ankle straps. They make you taller and also elongate your foot.

Now you know what shoes flatter your legs better if you have big ankles & calves! So clear the wrong ones out and get shopping for the right ones!!? lol

For my dear readers who don’t have big ankles & calves, I am sure you can’t wait to find out what’s best for you too; well, watch this space.

I will be back!

…And oh, by the way, the summer sales are still on so – get shopping!!!!
